The Golden Voice of Liberia

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Liberia Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

She joined the National Cultural Troupe as a child and learned the songs of every community in the country — then carried them through exile, singing as a way of keeping a record.

Princess Fatu Gayflor is a Liberian singer and dancer known as the Golden Voice of Liberia, and a member of the Liberian National Cultural Troupe.

Born in Kakata, she entered the troupe as a child and learned songs, dances and rhythms from across the country's ethnic communities, making her a carrier of oral history as much as a performer. Forced into exile by the civil war, she continued to sing and record, turning music into documentation and survival.
