William Vacanarat Shadrach Tubman was President of Liberia for more than twenty-six years, from 1944 until his death in 1971.
He is regarded by many Liberians as the father of the modern country, for his attempt to bridge the economic, political and social gulf between the descendants of the American settlers and the peoples of the interior.
