Albert Porte

1906 – 1986

The pamphleteer who would not stop, and the first Liberian journalist Tubman jailed

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Liberia Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

He wrote pamphlets criticising one Liberian government after another for fifty years. Tubman jailed him in 1946 — the first Liberian journalist imprisoned by a president — and he carried on regardless.

Albert Porte was an Americo-Liberian journalist, teacher and political pamphleteer, and editor of the Crozerville Observer.

In 1946 he became the first Liberian journalist to be imprisoned by President William Tubman, and he went on criticising successive administrations for decades afterwards, publishing at his own expense when no one would print him. The beginnings of organised civil society in Liberia are generally traced to his activity. He died in 1986.
